And time flies by and I'm in my first day of college. There are 30 of us destined to be docs by the end of four hopefully very eventful years. They say if you dont have fun in college, you probably never will.
And then she walked in with all importance peering down at us wannabes. She sat down and looked past those glasses perched at the tip of her nose the chain gleeming in the afternoon sun (you could taste the garlic on her breath, wonder what she had for lunch?) and she proceeded to advise us on how we would conduct ourselves as we turned ourselves into respectable members of society.
Don't make any friends. Of course we thought we heard wrong, I guess she perceived this and so she repeated those words again. Now I've lived a colorful life and have been given all kindsa crap advice but telling a bunch of barely adult 18 year olds that the stranger (it is the first day!) sitting next to them would only sabotage their chances of success and that you should because of this not cultivate any relationships within your academic ranks, is by far the dumbest words I've heard come out of someones mouth! (and i been around a lot of drunk ppl) She then proceeded to list out the rules that she believed would be the secret to our success. She suggested that we walk into class in the nick of time so as that we would not waste time fraternizing with the enemy. And if we missed an assignment, that we should'nt ask around for help because that would be selling your secrets to the enemy which then the enemy will use to waylay your plans and lead you to wrong information(sic) which will result in you FAILING THE COURSE.
Then she added these gems. Don't bother riding to college, take the bus so that you can use the commute to study. Leave the college premises immediately after the last class. If she saw us hanging around sharing our academic military secrets with the enemy camp (basically hanging out) she would report us to the the principal and then inform our parents of our transgressions and then make sure that we are gosh! EXPELLED.
Now as my title implies she was a qualified experienced gynecologist. Men are trusting her to take care of their pregnant wives in the delivery room. Mothers are expecting this woman to support them through what is arguably one of the most frightening experience of their lives! Babies are born into this ladys arms. And she believes the secret to success is NOT MAKING FRIENDS! gimme a break.......these are the people running the world.
